The Ninety-Nines, international organization of women pilots (The 99s), was founded in 1929 not long after the first women's transcontinental air race. The AWTAR traces its roots to that initial 1929 race. Begun in 1947 as a 99s event, the AWTAR was opened up to ALL women pilots in 1951. However, the Board of Directors was comprised of all 99s through the final race in 1977 and promoted The 99s with special entry fees and awards.

The Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund (AEMSF) is an endowed trust that is an integral part of The Nintey-Nines, Inc. AEMSF offers five types of training scholarships, plus a Research Scholar Grant program. This AWTAR website showcases the results of two generous Research Scholar Grants that preserve the history of women's air racing.

The Ninety-Nines Museum of Women Pilots (MWP) has a section in the museum dedicated to women's air racing. The AWTAR has a prominent location with photos and artifacts from numerous races. Other exhibits feature the Air Race Classic, which is the successor to the AWTAR, along with the accomplishments of several outstanding racers. The MWP is the primary archive for documents, records, and memorabilia for the AWTAR.

The Air Race Classic (ARC) was founded in 1977 as the successor race to the AWTAR. From humble beginnings it has grown to be the premier cross-country air race in existence today. While retaining the challenges of women's air racing, the ARC has further expanded its focus on education, especially through the Collegiate Challenge Trophy competition, as well as youth programs at the Start and the Terminus. Texas Woman's University (TWU) in Denton, Texas, is the official archive for both the  Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) and for the Air Race Classic (ARC). Many of the early racers were former WASPs whose rich military histories are preserved by TWU. TWU was recently selected by ARC as its official archive location; they have all race documents and memorabilia back to the ARC race start in 1977.
